Tip #1
Don't put uncooked rice down the garbage disposal because it has little bugs in it. Even if you plan on turning on the disposal and running the water a while to be sure all the little grains are washed out of your pipes. Because they won't all be washed out, believe me. And then later, when you plan on doing some dishes, the water will get all backed up in the sink.
Tip #2
When the water gets all backed up in the sink, don't turn on the garbage disposal to "help things along". It will just send a huge spray of water, rice and smushed peas high into the air and all over you and your pajamas.
Tip #3
Don't think that a whole bottle of Drano down the kitchen sink the next morning will solve all your problems. Even if you let the Drano sit for half an hour on your clog instead of the suggested 20 minutes. When you go to rinse with hot tap water, you will unknowingly be filling the dishwasher full of dirty dishes with hot nasty Drano water. Your dishwasher won't hold much and pretty soon, hot nasty Drano water will have leaked all over your kitchen floor.
Tip#4
Skip the call to your home warranty company. You won't get a plumber until the next morning and they will only allow him to plunge the sink (which won't move your stubborn clog) and you'll have wasted the $55 service fee. Ask the plumber to undo the pipes under your sink and snake out that nasty rice-filled clog and pay him out of your own pocket.
Tip#5
The dishwasher that sat filled with nasty Drano water will now not work. Just take out all those now disgustingly dirty dishes and wash them by hand.
Don't ask me how I came by this incredibly useful knowledge. I just know, all right?

oh yucky yucky! Our drain backs up a lot too, we just wait and wait until it slowly disolves after filling it with drano.
Sadly I too know first hand that it is not wise to turn on the disposal!
I didn't know any of that but I am not a homeowner either.
Does this mean you have to get a new dishwasher or will it work after it gets fixed (or sits for a while)?
Not funny to you, but very entertaining for me. Our disposal's been dead for awhile.

Oh, rough day! You should have brought your dishes over and we would've washed em in our dishwasher (although it isn't as fancy as yours). I just don't believe in hand washing anymore.
Oh, what a disaster,there is nothing worse than icky, nasty water everywhere. I hope your dishwasher starts working again. Have you checked the fuse?
